Your Team Leaders

Bob and Leslie Bell

As of November, 2009, we have led 34 teams around the world for Habitat for Humanity International's Global Village Department.....Kenya, Papua New Guinea, Mozambique, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, South Africa, Siberia, Thailand, Nepal.....and hope to add many more to that international list. Our 10 domestic teams have been to Florida for hurricane recovery building, as well as to Kauai and Alaska. Habitat for Humanity's mission is our mission, and we are commited to it.

As former Alaskans for nearly 30 years (Fairbanks, Yakutat, Homer), we have a deep passion for Alaska and its people. We still consider it "home" in our hearts, but enjoy living in Oregon for now, near two of our adult sons, daughter-in-law, and granddaughter. Another son and daughter-in-law live and work on the Big island of Hawaii.

Besides leading GV teams, we were full-time volunteers at HFHI headquarters in the Global Village department for two and half years, and then we were assigned to the Asia/Pacific region for another two and half years as what use to be called "International Partners" (Habitat's version of the Peace Corps). While there, we worked in 14 countries helping the national offices establish their own Global Village program to host and/or send Global Village teams. Having assisted some of these countries host other international teams has given us an unique insight into the "other side of the story" from the perspective of a host when we are leading a GV team.

Leading GV teams has been an excellent device for sharing our fascinating world with others, while working to eliminate poverty housing.... a vacation with a purpose.

When you are choosing a team to serve on, make sure it is to a country or state that "calls" you, and that you select a team leader carefully to make sure you are a "match". Ask them all the questions you want. It is important that you are comfortable with their expectations and that yours are defined as well. There are many teams, and many team leaders, to choose from. Search the GV team schedule for places, dates, and leaders that appeal to you on the habitat.org/gv website.
